Zhang Ziyi’s parents were Beijing residents who divorced when she was a child. She lived with her mother and attended the Beijing Dance Academy and Central Academy of Drama. She began modeling in advertisements at age 14, but it wasn’t until 1999 that she made her acting debut in The Road Home, for which she won Best Actress at the Hundred Flowers Awards.

In 2000, Zhang appeared in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as Yu Shi/Jen Yu, a skilled martial artist who becomes entangled in a love triangle between an older warrior and his deserting protégé. The film received critical acclaim and earned 10 Academy Award nominations, winning four including Best Foreign Language Film.

After appearing in Rush Hour 2 (2001) and Hero (2002), Zhang starred in Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) as Sayuri, a young Japanese girl who is sold to a geisha house and trained to be a high-ranking entertainer.
